Premantura
Situated at the end of the peninsula, immersed in the blue-green sea, it creates a magnificent sight. 30 kilometres of coastline, bays and beaches, uninhabited islands, unique flora and breathtaking landscape make Premantura a unique place. Its sea is one of the cleanest in the Mediterranean. The typical Mediterranean architecture gives the impression of a sleepy sea town, which resists the sea winds. In the centre, there is the tower of the church of Saint Lovro, the patron of Premantura, which is visible from the sea and has served as a landmark for fishermen and sailors for years. Its history goes deep into the past. The traces of dinosaurs, 70 million years old, on the nearby island Fenoliga, and remnants of the old buildings a few thousand years old, witness the early presence of life on the peninsula.
Because of its location, natural treasures and the openness of its inhabitants, Premantura is a perfect destination for those who want an active holiday in a unique environment. The cape Kamenjak, 9.5 km long, a protected landscape, is known for its stunning 30km long coastline (with large and small intimate coves and extremely clear water) and for more than 570 plant species, out of which 30 are on the endangered species list. Among them, there are 20 species of orchids, some of which are endemic. In front of Cape Kamenjak rises Porer, a lighthouse built in 1833 on an 80 m wide cliff, where today those who want a peaceful and unique “Robinson” vacation experience can be found. Premantura, with its extremely clean sea and winds that kisses its coast, is a paradise for windsurfers, while its seabed, rich in fish, shallow water, underwater rocks and sunken ships, lures every diver. Nowhere else the sunset has such beauty even in a bright night when the moon river does spread with passion. Premantura offers an unforgettable getaway that feeds the senses, gives new energy to the body and awakes the spirit.
Traces of dinosaurs, founded on the island Fenoliga in 1975, probably belonged to the theropod, ornithopod and to a species of sauropod dinosaurs, dating back from the Cretaceous period, between 65 and 70 million years of age. In ancient times Premantura was known as Capo di Pola and then in the 1st century the Roman Pomponio Mela called it Promunturium Polaticum from where its current name comes. According to the findings, Premantura was populated even 4,000 years ago. Three ruins were found, where life continued even after the Roman occupation, when it spread along the coast. From this period, along with some buildings, monuments with Greek and Latin inscriptions and a bronze statue of Minerva were found. During the Roman Empire, along with Pomer, Premantura belonged to Pula and in the 5th century it came under the Vescovi possession and then in the 8th century, under the Sergi family possession. It came under the Venetian rule in 1331. In 1585, the first settlers arrived in Premantura from Dalmatia, more specifically from Zadar, chased off by the Turks. The church of St.Lorenzo was under construction from 1632 to 1664. It is assumed that it was built on the foundations of the Church of St. Nikola from the mid-15th century. Nearby, there is a valley, which carried the name of Runtian or Runtianum. In the place of this village, in the Middle Ages, a settlement named Ronzano, later Ronzi, was built and today it is called Runke. It was completely destroyed by the Uskoci in the 17th century after being pillaged as well as a church dedicated to St. Martin in the bay. There are still several military facilities that exist from the Austro Hungarian period.
